Linea Research have been deigning and manufacturing OEM power amplifiers and digital speaker management processors for many years. Recently the company has launched products under the Linea Research brand name. The product line-up features a range of four and eight channel DSP amplifiers for both touring and installation markets. Linea’s advanced system processing is also available in the ASC48 a stand-alone eight channel system controller. Amplifiers are available with total output power ratings at 3kW, 6kW, 10kW or 20kW RMS.
Audiowall have recently added Linea Research 44M20 power amplifiers to our hire stock. The four channel amplifier is designed for the live sound/touring market and is the most powerful in the range.
Housed in a 2u rack-mount chassis, the four channel amplifier has a total power output of 20kW RMS. Specified as delivering 1,500W into 8Ω, 3,000W at 4Ω and 5,000W at 2Ω per channel with all channels driven.
The sonically pure amplifier has a stated frequency response of 7Hz – 30kHz at -2.5dB and a total harmonic distortion rating of <0.05% typical at 4Ω with a 1kHz signal.
Onboard the 44M20 we find the same advanced signal processing as the ACS48. Linea have taken a fresh approach to signal processing with their loudspeaker-centric drive modules. The basic concept is to create individual presets for different loudspeaker systems. Presets can then be recalled in various combinations and then saved as a snapshot for a complete system.
The drive module concept is perfect for the way we work with our range of modular PA systems. With our Wavefront systems, we can deploy different models from the range in various combinations to suit the required application. We can save individual presets for all of our different loudspeaker models and then recall them as needed.
All of the products from Linea’s range of amplifiers and processors can be remotely monitored and controlled with Linea’s proprietary system control software. The Linea Research 44M20 also allows full local control of all features from the front panel, which has been optimised for challenging live environments. Control via Linea’s intuitive Podware PC application provides many convenient and time saving features such as flexible management of presets and overlay grouping of mutes, gains, delays and EQ across the entire system.
Until recently it was standard for an audio company to stock more than one model of amplifier. Typically amps were designed for either high-power sub-bass or lower power mid-high applications. Companies would keep a range of amps with different output powers to suit different frequency ranges. A stand-alone system processor would then handle all the DSP.
High output amplifiers intended for sub-bass would not sound as sweet on HF as an amp designed for that use. With Linea Research M-series amplifiers that’s no longer the case, they are designed to adapt to the program material and sound fantastic at any frequency range. We can now stock one model of amplifier capable of driving any of the loudspeakers in our inventory.
A suite of powerful limiters offer extremely reliable and transparent output limiting. Peak and RMS voltage limiters can be calculated and set for the power handling of each specific drive unit. There is also excursion limiting, thermal limiting, excessive HF limiting and multi-band limiting for passive two-way enclosures. M-series amplifiers also feature mains current limiting. It’s possible to set a maximum draw for the mains power, which is handy for running this amp from a 13A wall socket or 16A breaker. With the amp running at full output power and no mains limiting set, the power supply will be demanding peaks of 50A.
Amplifier choice has always been something we take very seriously at Audiowall. For many years we have been using the C-Audio Pulse range of amplifiers (designed by the Linea Research team). We believed they were the best amps on the market for HF sonic quality. We had compared them to all other power amp manufacturers in A/B testing and not found anything that we would feel comfortable with replacing our stock of Pulse amps. That changed when we first listened to the M-series amplifiers. We compared a system running from M-series amps next to the same system driven from a rack of Pulse amps. We could hear an immediate difference with noticeable improvement in dynamic range and a lower noise floor.
Audiowall have a large stock of 44M20 amplifiers available with hire prices starting at £40+vat per day. We also stock the ASC48 advanced system controller and we still have a complete range of C-Audio Pulse amps including the 4300, 2650 and 21100
